Episode Review:

As someone who is a huge fan of  Studio Trigger as well as A-1 Pictures and their work I can safely say I am pumped for Darling in the FRANXX. I decided I wanted to try doing an episode by episode review of this series. I’m new to this way of reviewing and discussing anime in this way so this little experiment could go either way depending on how things go.

The episode starts off with very little information being given to the viewer. Small fragments of information are given but expansions on the information were only really given towards the second half of the episode. Therefore I don’t have much to say on the first half as it was spent trying to put the pieces together with small fragments I had to work with. The first half briefly introduces some of the side characters before properly meeting the main characters 016/Hiro and 002/Zero Two. Many of the character are parasites who pair up in teams of two (one female, one male) in order to use and control weapons known as FRANXX. This seems to be their sole purpose and without it they are nothing. Zero Two is some loose canon like girl who has horns sprouting from her head whilst Hiro is a kind of failure of a parasite who seems to be lost and alone compared to the others.

As I said the first half was fairly uneventful but the second half really showed some action which really grabbed my attention. A giant klaxosaur (robot dinosaur maybe???) appears and starts terrorising the plant just when the trainee parasites are about to head out in their FRANXX. Zero Two comes charging at the klaxosaur in her and her partners FRANXX and they fight against it unfortunately getting badly injured in the process. Her partner who is now half dead can no longer fight and she is not willing to give up and so she and Hiro team up (and have a little make out session). Their team up creates a masterpiece of sorts in terms of FRANXX as their hearts seem to become one and this awesome looking ‘iron maiden’ comes to life and destroys this rampant klaxosaur. The episode ends right after the fight with Zero Two being revealed to carry klaxosaur blood (I guess that’s why she has horns).

From the first episode I am very impressed with this series and I look forward to seeing how it progresses. I am not usually a fan of mecha series but I am excited to see where this one goes. I hope this collaboration between Trigger and A-1 doesn’t disappoint.

What did you guys think? Are you excited or did it leave you unimpressed? I’d love to hear your thoughts down below!
