This weeks five on Friday will feature a topic I personally love and many probably dislike and that is my favourite male English dub voice actors. I’m the kind of anime fan who appreciates both subs and dubs equally. I started out on dubs before moving into subs so I have a soft spot for dubbed anime.

Anime Blog Post
I know, what kind of sick twisted person likes dubs AND subs? The horror!

But in all seriousness I always love talking about some of my favourite actors and this post gives me the perfect excuse to do just that. Narrowing down my favourites was a real challenge though I must say. I have selected a hand-full of characters that each of the voices actors have portrayed (I’m sorry if certain characters aren’t on here I cannot include them all).

5. Christopher R Sabat

Roles include:

-All Might from My Hero Academia

– Alex Louis Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

– Garterbelt from Panty and Stocking

– Vegeta, Piccolo (as well as many others) from the Dragon Ball Series

Sabat has the best kind of voices for playing really strong characters such as All Might and Major Armstrong. He just has that really deep voice that works perfectly for these kinds of characters and his voices is instantly recognisable. I have a soft spot for his work as All Might as I don’t think Funimation could have picked anyone better for the role. He is such a veteran in the dub industry and I feel deserves a lot of praise.

4. Aaron Dismuke

Roles include:

Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

– Leonardo Watch from Blood Blockade Battlefront

– Licht Jekylland Todoroki from Servamp

– Chihiro Furuya from Sankarea: Undying Love

– Lucifer/Urushihara from The Devil is a Part Timer

I have always admired Dismuke’s voice work ever since I first saw him as Urushihara in The Devil is a Part Timer. There was something so distinctive about his voice to me and he became an instant favourite. His voice can often be very sweet especially when playing younger characters like Leo and Chihiro.

3. Justin Briner

Roles include:

– Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia

– Nasu no Yoichi from Drifters

– Mikaela Hyakuya from Seraph of the End

– Nico from Nanbaka

– Iwashimizu Sumiaki from All Out

I remember watching Nanbaka subbed when it first aired. Soon after I found out it was  also being simuldubbed I decided to check out the dub as well. I questioned who was going to be able to pull off Nico and capture his cute voice and personality. Turns out Justin Briner fit the bill of Nico perfectly and I’ve admired his voice work ever since. His voice works so well for very cute and sweet characters such as Nico, Deku and Iwashimizu. I always thought that the Japanese could pull off cute male voices better but Briner proved me wrong. Briner can also pull off the cool, collected characters such as Mika and Yoichi. I always appreciate actors who can be diverse with their voices.

2. J Michael Tatum

Roles include:

– Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler

– Kyoya Ootori from Ouran High School Host Club

– Rintaro Okabe from Steins;Gate

– Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss

– Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Tatum is basically the king of sounding suave when working on dubs. Many of his most famous roles such as Sebastian, Kyoya and Tomoe have given him an incredible reputation as he is able to pull of such cool and sophisticated characters like its second nature. On the flip side he is also able to channel other characters and parts of his voice when working on shows like Steins;Gate as Okabe. His American accent is much more prominent in roles like Okabe and he manages to sound so different compared to roles like Tomoe or Sebastian. On the flip side he is able to portray characters like Scar with such ease as well who sounds completely different to anything else I have heard him voice. Also as a Brit myself I applaud him greatly for his English accent in Black Butler as it is phenomenal.

1. Ian Sinclair

Roles include:

– Dandy from Space Dandy

– Romano from Hetalia

– Lawless of Greed from Servamp

– Zapp Renfro from Blood Blockade Battlefront

– Sousuke Yamazaki from Free Eternal Summer

Sinclair was an actor I recognised early on in watching anime as I, like I’m sure many others did, associated him with Romano from Hetalia. He really caught my attention as a voice actor when I saw his work in Space Dandy for the first time. His voice fit so perfectly for Dandy and he became a solid favourite of mine from that point on. His versatility gets him the number one spot. He can go from playing very cool characters like Sousuke which uses the lower end of his vocal range to crazy, wacky idiotic characters like Zapp and Lawless that uses the higher end of his range. I also admire his work ethic when it comes to his roles as he always seems to put 110% into every role he takes on and he expresses every emotion his characters are feeling to the best of his ability.

What do you guys think about my list? If you have a favourite male or female English voice actor then I’d love to here who they are down below!

Thanks for reading and I hope you’re having a great day!

  1. Vic Mignogna would be one of my picks, especially since he also sang multiple anime opening songs in addition to voice acting. I agree with J Michael Tatum, he’s great.

      1. Yeah he sang some of the early One Piece openings and sang Brothers, song in Fullmetal Alchemist. There’s probably more that I don’t know of yet. XD
