Another day another wonderful tag to give my own little spin on. I was tagged by the truly fabulous Neko Neha to do the create a story tag. Thank you so much for tagging me as this tag is amazing and I love how each and every persons story will differ completely from the same options. I felt both excited and nervous for this tag as I haven’t written a story in a long time.
1. You pick your first word, your setting, and your story genre from the list below. As individuals, your brand of creativity is unique to yours, so we want to highlight that by letting you choose from a bunch of words and creating something beautiful out of it.
2. The short story will have a limit of 1000 words. You do not need to write a story with 1000 words exactly. It could be 300, or 500 as long as it doesn’t surpass a thousand.
3. YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO ANSWER THE TAG.
4. You must tag three people to participate.
5. Don’t forget to link back to Keiko (use her latest post for now) so she can collect all the stories. You can’t just link back to her WordPress, since she won’t be alerted of the pingback. You need to link back to a post or a page, because WordPress works like this.
6. Use the Create-A-Story picture in the post.
7. Copy and paste the rules in your tag post as well, so others can be clued in to the Create-A-Story rules.
Rain hammered against the window of the log cabin. Zack looked up from his laptop surprised at how the weather had worsened since he arrived . What had been a beautiful mountain get away had turned into a damp soggy mess. A crisp, clear view of the crystal blue sky and sloping rocky mountains had turned to a dull, grey fog so thick Zack could cut through it with his hand. A perfect metaphor for how his brain felt currently as he stared hard at the blank word document glowing before his eyes.
He sighed utterly exasperated by his writers block. His editor would kill him if he didn’t get some work done but his head was elsewhere. He looked over towards the side of his bed in a feeble attempt to get away from the problem and came face to face with another one. A small scrap of paper sat on the side table which he had been handed the night before. Reaching over to pick it up he hesitated. The paper had come from a guy named Matt who had for the past week had been consistently trying to start conversations on various nerdy topics ever since he saw Zack sporting an Attack on Titan t-shirt. It turns out this guy was flirting with Zack which deep within he was rather thrilled about as he was just his type. Well, the chance that he was flirting was highly probable considering he had given him his number but Zack was far too dense in the ways of romance to understand when someone was flirting with him. Even if someone were to yell in his face that they loved him he’d probably take it as some twisted joke.
In a moment of pure instinct he grabbed the paper and scrambled for his phone before his courage to call left him completely. Staring hard at the phone he began to dial the number. Taking a long deep breath Zack’s finger hovered over the call button as a massive thud followed by a bellowing “HELLO?” came from his cabin door. His fingers fumbled as he played catch with the phone before it ultimately fell to the floor in his panic. “Crap” Zack whispered from under his breath as if he could be heard from the other side of the door. It was Matt. The guy he was about to phone seconds earlier. Why was he here? Without really thinking about it Zack fumbled from the bed to the door opening it as if his life depended on it. He was met by a tall, lean male wearing his biggest and warmest smile. “Hi” Matt began “can I umm, can I come in and get out of the rain?”. “Oh, yes. Yes, of course. Come in” Zack replied staring down at his shoes in embarrassment. “Wanna play?” asked Matt. Zack’s head shot up in confusion “I’m sorry, what?”. Matt held up his backpack pulling out a game console. “Ya know, Nintendo Switch. Wanna play with me?” he asked again with a warm smile. “Sure, why not” squeaked Zack with a nervous smile.
Sitting down next to Matt as he set up the Switch at the coffee table Zack fidgeted awkwardly out of nerves. Has this guy really been flirting with him? Or was it some misunderstanding on his part? “So, why didn’t you call?” Matt asked passing him a controller. The question broke right through Zack’s panicked inner dialogue. “Nerves I guess. I mean I was about to call right when you knocked on the door”. Zack paused looking down at his hands “I’m not very good at this kind of thing, you know? Calling, flirting, any of it. I suck because I’m scared of it”. “Matt turned so he came face to face with Zack “hey, look I didn’t mean to make you feel awkward I just think you’re cute and would like to get to know you better”. “I’m asexual but you’ll want sex eventually right? Maybe even right away right?” Zack blurted out before he could think. “Oh God. I’m sorry that was rude I shouldn’t have” his voice trailed off as Matt started laughing. “Why, why are you laughing? It’s not funny. I’m being serious.”he cried. Matt’s laughter died down before he paused and smiled at Zack. “I’m not laughing at you or because I think it’s funny. I’m laughing because I’m the same and I’m equally as terrified about that whenever I talk to guys”. “I’ve always wanted something more ya know? A companion. A partner in crime. Someone to play video games with and laugh without a care. But many just want to hop in bed and get right to it”. Zack gazed at Matt as if he was seeing him for the first time. “Let’s just take it slow and get to know each other ok?” Matt said softly placing his hand over Zack’s. Zack’s face lit up gleefully “yeah. Yeah ok”. “You know that’s the first time all week that I’ve seen a proper smile from you” Matt said grinning mischievously. Zack laughed before smirking “I bet you can’t beat me at Mario Kart!” Matt scoffed “oh you’re on”.
The rain didn’t seem so bad anymore as the two played and talked through the day and into the night. Although his editor would still kill him Zack didn’t care. His head felt clear and his heart felt full and in that moment he thought that maybe he wasn’t so bad at this romance thing.
So how did I do? Considering I haven’t written a story in probably about four or five years I’m very rusty so forgive me if it’s not the greatest piece of literature you have read. I know it’s missing a lot of elements but it turns out a thousand words isn’t a lot when trying to write a story and that really challenged my writing abilities. I had a lot of fun writing this and maybe writing stories is something I could try dabbling in more often.
Until next time thanks for reading and I hope you’re having a great day!
