Spooky Recommendations for Halloween

The spooky season is almost upon us and I thought it would be fun to share some of the series I think are perfect this Halloween. I did a post similar to this last year and I thought it would be fun to do it again for 2018.

Uzumaki by Junji Ito

It’s not often I talk about manga on my blog mainly because I watch more than I read. No Halloween would be complete without a good old Junji Ito recommendation. I read Uzumaki over the summer and I loved every second of it. It was beautifully done and some of the scenes were utterly haunting to look at. The manga centres around a town which has been cursed with spirals and this curse comes in many forms. From crazy hair to deformed bodies it’s got all the body horror you could need this Halloween.

Perfect Blue

This is another one that I checked out over the summer. I found the Perfect Blue movie on the Vice channel on my TV so decided to check it out. I had no idea what it was about going into it and I was very impressed with the outcome. This is a perfect dark, psychological horror to sink your teeth into. The idol industry in Japan can get pretty bizarre to begin with but this film takes it to a whole new level exploring the dark crevices of the idol and entertainment industries. I won’t spoil anything but the ending blew me away and I couldn’t ask for a better twist.

Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life is an anime I finally got round to watching recently. I made a full review of it which you can read here. This anime is perfect for the season of spooks as it’s just so dark and creepy. The deceptive look of this anime from a first glance is incredible. With the rather frightening premise mixed with a range of insane and creepy characters it is a winner this season.

King’s Game

Ok, this is a more of a silly recommendation. I reviewed this anime after it finished airing in autumn of 2017. I recommend this for Halloween as one of those ‘it’s so bad it’s actually good’ series. I’m contradicting myself here as the series is by no means ‘good’ in any sense of the word. But it’s so entertaining to watch and I checked it out every week just to see how bad it could get. If you want an insanely bad horror to watch and poke fun at this year then King’s Game is perfect for just that.

That’s just a handful of stuff to check out this Halloween. If you guys have any Halloween recommendations for me then I’d love to hear them in the comments!

Until next time thanks for reading and I hope you’re having a great day!

  1. I read Uzumaki last year and it was creepy. I need to watch Perfect Blue because I see it all the time. Happy Sugar Life is already on the list. This is an excellent list for Halloween. This only thing that’s missing is the Food Network. They are awesome this time of year!😁
