Today I wanted to try something different on my blog, an album review. Since it is the new year I wanted to try to bring in some new content and expand my horizons some more on what I look into and review on my blog.
Whilst scrolling through the never ending depths of Spotify one night whilst trying to sleep I decided to give the infamous Kyary Pamyu Pamyu a try. I have a habit of listening to the same things over and over again and I knew it couldn’t hurt to give something new a try. The only song I knew up until the point of actually listening to her music was the famous ‘PONPONPON’ which has circled around the internet for a long time. I decided to click on the first album I came across on her Spotify profile which turned out to be her 2018 album titled Japamyu.
Japan is known for its technology and creation of many beloved video games and this album starts out like a blast from the past. An 80’s arcade game style track titled ‘Virtual Pamyu Pamyu’ entices you into the album before the rest of the album blasts forward to the bubblegum J-Pop sound that would fit perfectly into any CGDCT anime series. This is the soundtrack of the kawaii culture of Japan and is the perfect anthem to play in districts such as fashion forward Harajuku or electronic Akihabara.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has such a sweet, distinctive voice as if it’s made from pure sugar. Her voice is supported beautifully by electronic beats, trance like melodies and sugary synthesisers really makes me rise in spirits whilst listening. Japamyu has this quality of feeling so pure and innocent taking influence from electronic style sound whilst occasionally splashing in some traditional music from the land of the rising sun.
Overall I am extremely impressed with Japamyu and I think Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has gained a new fan. I look forward to exploring more of her work.
Overall rating: 8/10
Until next time thanks for reading and I hope you’re having a great day!
