This year saw some great releases in terms of anime and I watched some absolute bangers this year and so I thought it would be fun to reflect on some of the anime that particularly stood out to me over the course of 2021.
SK8 The Infinity
SK8 The Infinity was an absolutely killer way to start off 2021 and the anime really lived up to the expectations I set for it. In fact, I think it outdid my initial expectations! Everything about this anime was an absolute delight and I had a lot of fun tuning in each week to see what would happen next. It was magical to witness Langa develop a love for skateboarding and grow his friendship with Reki and made me excited for skateboarding as a sport and hobby. The drama of the series especially towards the end was just so addicting to watch and I love how intense, emotional and passionate all of the characters got! I loved everyone…except Adam…screw Adam!
Life Lessons With Uramichi Onii-san
Life Lessons With Uramichi Onii-san is probably my favourite anime to come out of 2021 and even I can say I never saw this one taking the top spot. Uramichi Onii-san is a series I’d never even heard of until it began airing and even then it was a spur of the moment decision to give it a watch. Life Lessons With Uramichi Onii-san highlights the style of comedy I crave when it comes to anime as it blends childish slapstick with darker and more mature humour. I love the contrast of this series and how the colourful, children’s TV aesthetics blend with the harsher realities of being an adult and having a job. The casting for this anime was also absolutely stellar as it featured many of my favourite seiyuu which was an added bonus for me!
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated
When The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated was first announced I’ll be honest when I say I wasn’t going to give it a watch. I just expected it to me your run of the mill fantasy-centric anime and wasn’t going to give it the time of day but oh boy how I was wrong! I’m not even sure what made me decided to give it a chance in the first place but I sat down and gave it a fair shot and after the first couple of episodes I was hooked! This reverse isekai anime is perfect for people like myself who loved The Devil is a Part-Timer when that first came out. The characters are all super fun and there are multiple instances of this anime making me laugh out loud with the anime’s style of humour. Plus I absolutely love Jahy as the main protagonist of the anime. She has that perfect balance between good and evil within her character which really says a lot considering she’s a demon!
Don’t Toy With Me Miss Nagatoro
I remember just before I started watching Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, thinking I’m either going to absolutely love this series or I’m going to absolutely hate it. Thankfully, it was the former! I adore Miss Nagatoro and I had such a blast watching it earlier in the year. I found Nagatoro and her senpai’s dynamic as both characters and love interests to be extremely fun and charming. Nagatoro’s teasing nature paired with the fact that she really cares for her senpai deep down was lovely to watch. In fact, I love this series so much that I’ve recently started picking up the manga and I hope we get a season two in the near future!
Horimiya
Horimiya was one of the most wholesome anime I watched this year and I loved every second of this anime! This anime was a genuine delight and I absolutely love the main couple Hori and Miyamura. One of my favourite things about this anime is the fact that Miyamura is the stereotypical quiet kid who secretly got loads of piercings and tattoos which I’m a total sucker for! I love that contrast of his character and was genuinely so sad when he chopped all his long hair off for a shorter look! WHY MIYAMURA?!
Kimetsu No Yaiba: Demon Slayer Mugen Train
I’m always reluctant to put continuations of already established anime of these kinds of lists but I just had to include the Demon Slayer Mugen Train film! I was lucky enough to see this in cinema’s back in July of this year. I have still yet to rewatch the film on my TV but seeing it in theatres was an EXPERIENCE! Like, an experience of epic proportions so I just had to include it in my favourites since it was such a memorable watch for 2021. Everything from the animation to the music to the voice acting were superb and I think turning the Mugen Train arc into one long film was such a smart move on the studios part!

Yeah, the anime line up for 2021 really surprised me too. There was some really great anime this year, and they where kind of flying under the radar for a while!
